Marginalization in Workspaces

Who are marginalized employees?

Marginalization happens when employees are treated as invisible or as if they are all interchangeable and replaceable. The value of their unique skills and talents as people get diminished, or are even seen as unwelcome or unnecessary.

In general, the major groups that are traditionally marginalized are:

  • ethnic minorities
  • religious minorities
  • people with disabilities or challenges
  • LGBTQIA+ persons
  • women

These are employees who are excluded from opportunities or face a lack of opportunities for authentic participation in formal or informal day-to-day conversations, decision making or group activities in an organization.

The burden is put on them to include themselves even while their unique identities are minimized as unimportant.
